Description

Kona Extra Fancy, grown on the Big Island of Hawaii, is the highest grade of Kona Coffee available. Kona Coffee is sorted by size, using various screen sizes. Kona Extra Fancy is sorted with a screen size of 19, yielding a larger bean. Such beans take longer to develop, allowing them to absorb more nutrients from the tree. This yields a bold, complex, well-rounded cup of coffee.

Kona Hills Coffee Company is located on the slopes of Mauna Loa, where the soil is rich in the Mauka Honaunau district of Hawaii. At an altitude of about 2,000 feet, all coffee trees are 100-year-old trees. Their mission is to provide customers with an unforgettable Kona Coffee taste made the old-fashioned way. Roasted to medium datk, it is very smooth. CBC provides high quality coffee beans.

I don’t get it. I know it’s recommended to roast Kona on the light side, so I tried a city roast (no second crack) as I don’t tend to like lighter roasts. Brewed in Chemex. It’s just not special to me. The Uganda roasted to Vienna that I ordered at $6 a pound is far superior to my tastes. I understand that Kona is always expensive so not a knock on CBC, it’s just nowhere near worth the premium for me.

Took these beans just into second crack in a Whirley Pop and brewed with a Chemex. I was very disappointed (lots of woody flavors) and was concerned about the beans being stale, until I adjusted my grind size for a little coarser than I normally use. Result was an excellent, nutty, sweet cup.

Roasted to medium. Just bought a sample bag but it was excellent.

I hand roasted it in a net over gas stove and roasted to just passed first crack. Rested the bean for 4 days. While I used V60 pour over, I first tried ground to water ratio of 1:17 and found that it yielded an overly rich cup. I then tried a 1:20 ground to water ratio and produced a very nutty and sweet cup. Very smooth and complex with great sweet lingering aftertaste. Highly recommend this bean! I have reordered two more pounds!
